The Book

Every Corner Has a Name

A Memoir of Grief, Forgiveness, and Learning It's OK to Cry

Book cover of Every Corner Has a Name by Melvin Williams Sr.: a man on a Philadelphia street at night looking up at his late father's face in the sky above the city skyline.

I was two years old when a bullet took my father. I didn't cry for him until I was forty-five.

In between, gun violence kept coming. My uncle. My cousins. Friends I grew up with on corners that now carry their names. I did what a lot of men from my neighborhood do. I held it. I built a life, a family, a foundation. And I never let myself fall apart.

Then, in 2024, the phone rang. Decades later, there was going to be a trial. In 2025 I walked into a courtroom and looked at the man who killed my father.

This book is what happened next. It's about grief that doesn't run on anybody's schedule, forgiveness that isn't weakness, and the strength it takes to finally cry. It's for anyone carrying a name.
